I posted this in light of the shooting that happened in Isla Vista on May 23, 2014.
“I didn’t want to previously include this into my first post, for reasons of really being in the moment. There is a time to mourn, but also a time to advocate and stand up. It’s extremely hard just to sit back, do nothing, and see on the news every month, every week about the gun violence that is plaguing our country. Sure, gun violence has many different causes… but there is a root cause that we should be turning our attention to.
Gun ownership doesn’t only affect those owning guns, but those around you as well… As long as we continue to justify the ownership of guns as a right, as something that guarantees protection and personal freedom, it’s hard to see a way out of this viscous cycle.
True, a lot of gun violence seems (I really don’t have any statistics…) to happen in more urban and suburban areas… Maybe as a short term solution our society needs to have the flexibility to regulate gun ownership in cities and suburban towns, as opposed to a one size fits all that also covers more rural areas of the country? Maybe the NRA needs to stop backing a one size fits all? Maybe people need to stop looking at such short sighted, one sided benefits, and look beyond into the thousands of people who are affected by gun violence every day.”
