Ed Miliband has resigned as leader of the Labour party after devastating election results. He says he “takes absolute responsibly for the results”. Live updates

Out of all the resignations tonight, I didn’t really expect Ed Milliband to resign. Yes, Labour party didn’t gain as much as expected, and in fact, lost a couple of seats, but it still hung on. The loss was largely in Scotland where the SNP had lost, and I don’t know if the blame for that is squarely on Milliband’s shoulders or that of the party leadership in Scotland.
